To Start Family Fun, Finish Your Basement
Your basement can give you more than storage. In fact, a basement remodel can offer you plenty of storage space plus new living space the whole family can enjoy.
For success, though, your basement remodeling project must start with good planning to avoid two key problems. First, here in the Boulder area, you may have an issue with dampness. Even if your basement is finished, you’ll want to let your remodeler work some magic to get rid of any musty smell or the risk of flooding. Second, typical basement remodeling challenges like low ceilings, small windows and poor natural lighting require innovative design to create the allusion of a much brighter, airier space. Here at Melton Construction, we have the expertise to help you address these concerns right from the start.

Once you’ve solved any problems, let’s explore the possibilities together! Start with how you’d like your space to function. If storage is desired, think about what specifically you want to store. For example, the right solution for built-in storage for frequently used items will be much different than creating storage for holiday decorations that only need to be accessed once a year. Also be specific about the family activities you want to enjoy. A media room, for example, will have a different layout, design, lighting and wiring compared to a basement remodel for a home gym or spa. Or, maybe you want a fabulous wine cellar, cozy family room, home office or even a suite for a grown child who has returned to the nest.
What can your basement become? Here are three interesting ideas:
Playland. No, not just an open space surrounded by a jumble of toys! Imagine a beautifully lit area with floor-to-ceiling storage, an art center with sink, mini stage, and perhaps even an indoor swing.
The Party Place. Entertaining is so fun – and easy – with a basement remodel that includes party-friendly features such as a mini kitchen, wet bar, built-in flat screen or an island that serves as well for book club buffets and Super Bowl spreads as it does for games at the kids' sleepovers.

Hobby Central. Let built-ins provide a place for everything – just like Martha Stewart’s own craft room! Picture those beautiful shelves, cubbies, and roomy spaces for sewing or crafting. Plus, with today’s ventilation and dust-capture technologies, you can even enjoy a custom woodworking shop with great lighting, work surfaces, sound system and more!
Remember, with creative remodeling ideas and some planning, your basement can provide storage and a place for family fun. If you’re wondering how your own basement can "be all it can be," give us a call. We’d be delighted to take a look at the space and share some ideas.

Ty’s Tip: Make Sure Your Downspouts and Splashblocks are Clear
Leaves and debris can block your downspout or splashblock, causing the water to pool up and possibly leak into your home. Always keep them clear and properly draining water away from your property.
 See you next month!
